Why don't motorcycles have like 8 speed transmissions?
I want one of these new Sr400 with an 8 speed transmission for more cruising abilities.

Because your ankle would start to hurt and the toe spot of your boot would wear out quicker :)

Weight and wanting to keep things as small as possible maybe?

I think that modern motorcycles has hit the pointwhere you don't get anything beneficial with more gears. The impovements in fuel economy will be miniscule, but it will add uneccessary weight and complexity. I will say that even on cars things like 8,9 or 10 gears are too much and is a lazy way to improve fuel economy, instead of just working to get 6 or 7 to do the same.

Well, i had a CVT scooter, and it's amazing.
8 Speed bike tough..
I once ride those Kawasaki Ninja 250 with 6 speed, and i hate to do downshift on that thing.

1: Because they haven't been subject to the gear-mania that cars are currently under-going.
2: Motorcycles are inherently fuel efficient by being light weight, but aren't usually sold as being 'green' to the point of a marketing push that would cause it to have that many gears.
3: Motorcycles are generally less expensive to produce and to maintain or repair, so added complexity is not necessary.
4: most motorcycles are not automatically shifted, and those that are have either been un-popular, or hindered by it, and some motorcycles or mopeds have used CVTs rather than lots of gears.
5: motorcycle gearboxes are small, and stacking more than 6 gears in the engine/gearbox case adds weight, complexity, cost, and size, none of which are big advantages compared to 4-6 gear ratios.

Just like a car (IMO), they don't need them.
Also, the case is only so big to hold all 'dem gears.
